Renewable Energy
The sun comes at the end of darkness, her rising fills the sky and our hearts with hope.
The sun is the original source of almost all the energy we use. Bio-fuels and wood, hydro, wind and wave power all derive from solar energy. Even fossil fuels were dependant upon solar energy for their creation millions of years ago.
It is unlikely that any one source of renewable energy will be able to supply all your energy needs throughout the year, the amount of energy available from each renewable source varies with the seasons through the year. However, by combining two or more renewable sources, it is possible to achieve a more balanced supply of energy. For instance, wind and solar photovoltaic systems often complement each other well: the wind turbine produces more energy in the winter, the solar panels in the summer.
Stand Alone or Remote systems are used where there is no connection to the national electricity grid available. In these systems a battery is used to store electrical energy until it is needed. The battery capacity must be sufficient to last for periods when no electricity is generated, 5 to 7 days reserve capacity is usually sufficient to provide an uninterrupted supply in Britain. Specially designed lead acid batteries are normally used, these are similar to a normal car battery but are capable of being charged and discharged many times without damage.
Where there is a connection to the national grid, it is possible to connect renewable energy systems to the mains supply through a grid connection invertor. The grid electricity supply then acts as a battery - you sell electricity to the supply company when you are generating more than you are using, and buy it back when you need more than you can generate. You must obtain consent from the electricity supply company before connecting any generating equipment or system to the grid network.
