Permaculture Design
This is the classic permaculture course following the syllabus recognised by Permaculture Institutes and Associations worldwide. On successful completion of the course participants are awarded the Certificate of Permaculture Design and are able to practice as Permaculture Designers.
Permaculture is a design system which is based upon observation of natural systems. The term is derived from a contraction of both the terms Permanent Agriculture and Permanent Culture. This reflects the interdependence of human society and agriculture in a sustainable culture; a relationship which has sadly been lost in the contemporary western world.
Permaculture is rooted in an ethical framework which seeks to care for both people and the wider environment in which we live, and upon which we depend for our sustenance. A set of design principles are then used to design human ecosystems which display the natural resilience of naturally occurring eco-systems. Permaculture can be used to design systems at any scale; although originally conceived as a way of designing self-reliant homesteads, Permaculture has subsequently been used successfully in designs ranging in scale from city apartment balconies to entire bio-regions.
Whether your interest is gardening, farming, planning, building homes, community work, economic regeneration, business or green lifestyles, the application of Permaculture principles empowers you to make a positive contribution towards a sustainable future. Permaculture design is about practical ecological strategies for land, water, buildings, people and communities. It is based on the philosophy of cooperating with nature and caring for the earth and its peoples.
The Permaculture Design Course involves 72 hours of teaching time. Although there is a syllabus set by the Permaculture Association which has to covered, the course includes both practical hands on work on real projects and visits to permaculture demonstration sites to reinforce the theoretical content delivered in the classroom.
The Permaculture Design Course can be delivered in a number of formats including an intensive two week residential block, a series of day or weekend workshops or as an evening class. This enables people with differing commitments and needs to find a way of attending a course.
